The world uses a variety of different sources of energy. In 2018 fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal, were responsible for more than 81 percent of energy consumed. Renewables such as solar power, wind power biomass, hydroelectricity, and wind power account for 14 percent. Nuclear energy is responsible for another 5%. Different countries utilize different energy sources to balance the needs of their economy and environmental concerns.

Nature provides energy in a number of forms, including sunlight winds, waves oceans, and more. These sources of energy transform into more efficient energy forms, such as electricity or heat, when they are harnessed. When these energy sources are used up, they become non-renewable energy sources.

The environment is harmed by many fossil fuels, along with other sources of energy that are not renewable. For example mining for oil may destroy the forests of the planet. Fracking (hydraulic fracturing) can cause earthquakes and water pollution. Carbon dioxide is released when coal is burned which causes global warming.

Fortunately that many of the most promising energy sources are renewable and sustainable. Solar, wind, and hydropower can create, for instance, electricity without having to dig for new sources.

Tidal and Wave Power are two more renewable energy sources that are gaining popularity. To be used at a large-scale, these technologies require efficient distribution networks. They must be constructed which will require the use of non-renewable energy sources. These sources aren’t sufficient to satisfy the majority of our energy needs. It is important to be aware that prices for renewable energy equipment have come down dramatically over the past couple of years, and efficiency is growing rapidly.
